HOUSTON -- With right-hander Collin McHugh producing six scoreless innings on the heels of the scoreless start delivered by rookie right-hander Joe Musgrove the evening before, the Astros might be on the brink of creating the momentum with their starting pitching that theyll need entering a rigorous stretch of their schedule. After completing their three-game series with Oakland on Wednesday, the Astros (70-62) will contest a make-or-break run of 13 games against first-place teams in Texas (away and home), Cleveland (away), and the Chicago Cubs (home). And while the Astros will need help from their inconsistent offense and exceptional bullpen, their rotation will set the pace over the next couple of weeks. Were going to need our starting pitching to pitch well to get where we want to get, Astros manager A.J. Hinch said. Were going to expand rosters in September and bring up a little more velocity and have a couple different options, but the tone has always been set on this team by our starting pitchers. And weve always felt very comfortable with a lead so we all have to work in conjunction. The tone that the starters have been able to set getting into games, we generally win those games.Right-hander Mike Fiers (9-6, 4.40 ERA) will toe the rubber for the Astros in the series finale with Oakland, against whom he has struggled in two starts this season.Fiers, whose last scoreless start came on July 1 against the White Sox, is 0-1 with a 6.74 ERA against the Athletics, having allowed eight runs on 12 hits and three walks with 10 strikeouts over 10 2/3 innings. Fiers is winless in five career starts against Oakland, going 0-2 with a 4.76 ERA.Left-hander Ross Detwiler, selected from Triple-A Nashville on Aug. 10, will make his fifth start for Oakland (57-75). Detwiler (1-3, 5.74 ERA) has allowed 14 runs in 14 innings over three starts, all losses, after tossing eight scoreless innings in his first start with the Athletics. He was traded to Oakland from Cleveland on July 17.Detwiler is 1-0 with a 2.38 ERA in five career appearances (three starts) against Houston. While the Astros are seeking to build momentum through their rotation for a postseason berth, the Athletics are looking toward development, with right-hander Kendall Graveman pitching well yet again despite taking a 3-1 loss Tuesday.Graveman is 9-3 with a 3.36 ERA over his last 17 starts. Entering Tuesday, his eight wins since June 23 were tied for third most in the American League, and while the Astros bested him with a pair of home runs from Colby Rasmus and Evan Gattis, Graveman showed again that he just might be turning a developmental corner. This is a guy that we felt like when we made the trade (with the Blue Jays on Nov. 28, 2014) had a high ceiling, Athletics manager Bob Melvin said. Hes shown spurts similar to the ways hes pitching, maybe not this consistent, but hes really taken ownership of the fact that hes the last of the Mohicans here as far as the starters we have and has really pitched like a guy who wants to pitch in the top of the rotation. His numbers would suggest he has here recently. Montae Nicholson Jersey

In the response filed Wednesday to the complaint by 30-year-old Alexander Bradley, attorneys say the former University of Florida player is invoking his Fifth Amendment right that protects people from incriminating themselves.Arsene Wenger has dismissed suggestions Arsenal have already fallen behind Tottenham in North Londons balance of power and believes his young team will improve next season. The Gunners remain six points behind second-placed Spurs, albeit with a game in hand, and are widely considered to be out of the race for this seasons Premier League title. Arsene Wenger doesnt think Jack Wilshere is ready to play for Arsenal against Crystal Palace on Super Sunday The possibility of Spurs finishing higher than them in the league for the first time since Wengers appointment in 1996 is distinct. And given Spurs youth and the likelihood they will be strengthened further by qualifying for the Champions League, indications are that Wengers Arsenal may have finally fallen behind their bitter rivals.Wenger insisted he remains hopeful of catching them during their final six league fixtures of the season, however, and also implied that their respective records during the past 18 years mean one superior league campaign changes little.First of all, we are not behind yet, he said ahead of his sides Super Sunday game with Crystal Palace, live on Sky Sports.Tottenham have been 18 years behind us, they survived you know, so lets be realistic. If Leicester win on Sunday, it doesnt change the fact that we have absolutely to win our game. Lets prepare for that, no matter what the result of Leicester is. Alex Iwobi has impressed since breaking into the Gunners first team Leicester can still drop points on Sunday [at home to West Ham in the opening match of Super Sunday].During a disappointing second half of the season, Arsenal have been eliminated from the FA Cup and Champions Leaggue and fallen 13 points behind Leicester.ddddddddddddAlex Iwobi and January signing Mohamed Elneny have impressed in that time, though, and Wenger has revealed he expects his side to continue to develop. The manager believes strengthening his present squad will prove difficult and - despite being criticised for signing only Petr Cech last summer, and amid reports he intends to overhaul his team - he plans to retain Arsenals present core of players. You cannot dismiss the players. We spoke about Iwobi, hes 19 years of age, Elneny 23, [Francis] Coquelin 24 - they will be stronger, the Frenchman added. You need to keep a core of players and strengthen where we can, but the team is going the right way. Its at the moment difficult for us to accept were not completely there, but you have to accept that.If you look at the top three, youll see that the teams have not changed a lot.We have to strengthen, but it is not obvious, despite the money the English clubs will have, to find the players who will strengthen your squad. We will of course work very hard to do that and we are already working, but we have to find the players. Its not easy. Arsene Wenger thinks the Premier League have set a dangerous precedent by preventing Kevin Friend from refereeing Tottenhams next game I will judge (Elneny) at the end of the season, but for sure hes had a big impact, much bigger than expected because usually a guy comes in, it takes him a few months to adapt, and him and Iwobi had a big impact on the quality of our game.Watch Arsenal v Crystal Palace on Super Sunday.
